Sambhavna (Possibility) in the city of Disasters

Sambhavna Trust was started in 1995 to support the victims of the unfolding disasters in Bhopal. The Trust, formed by scientists, doctors, editors and activists working in support of the survivors since the disaster, started Sambhavna Trust Clinic on September 2, 1996. More than 37 thousand people poisoned by Union Carbide, a US multinational, have so far been registered for long term medical care at the Sambhavna Clinic.

Developing as a model centre for medical care of victims of chemical disasters, the Sambhavna Clinic is unique in many ways.

Integrated Healthcare Without Harm

Sambhavna Clinic offers medical care by combining three different systems of healing - Modern medicine, Ayurveda, with Panchakarma and Yoga therapy. Such integration of different systems of medical care have been found to be more effective than following any of the systems alone. For example, according to our Clinic’s data, modern medicine for thyroid problems found in most gas victims, Ayurveda treatment for constipation and loss of appetite that are also common health problems and Yoga care for back pain are the most effective methods of medical care for these problems.

Unique Innovations Create Possibilities

Sambhavna Clinic's building, internal organisation, funding & budgeting, community health program, medicinal alternatives, volunteer program and other unique innovations offer a model of sustainable healthcare that can effectively respond to corporate crimes like industrial pollution and climate change. Members of Sambhavna have been publishing articles in international scientific journals for the last 21 years on the health effects of gas exposure on the victims and their future generations. The clinic's efforts have also earned it three international and one regional award so far.
